Biography
Toba Yang was born in 1984, ChangChun, China. She studied in Beijing and Shanghai before she arrived in Paris in 2007 where she has lived and worked ever since. She holds degrees in both arts and science/ technology: a DNSEP degree from École Nationale Supérieure d’Arts Paris Cergy (2014) and a bachelor’s degree in Bioengineering from East China University of Science and Technology (2007).
Toba’s work is playful, intriguing, and fragmental, drawing inspiration from the myriad things that captivate her in life. Whether it’s a half- heard, half-imagined story, a documentary about trees’ preference on music, the gargoyle of a Gothic church, or the scenography of a Pina Bausch play, her art captures the essence of these fleeting moments and forms. Even a poem that starts with a period and transitions into a slanted comma, ever more inclined, evokes a vivid life form that breathes through her creations. The exploration of multiple media has been a constant throughout the years, with her work spanning oil painting, knitting, tapestry, and digital drawing. She finds as much interest in the traditional hand-making processes as in modern technological methods. In Toba's hands, each piece becomes a fragment of a larger narrative, inviting viewers to piece together their own stories. Her art is a testament to creativity, curiosity, and the endless possibilities that emerge when energy and imagination converge. Her works have been exhibited in institutions and galleries such as Fondation Louis Vuitton, Fondation Kadist, Nathalie Obadia Gallery, Jean-Collet Gallery, YGREC Gallery, among others. She has participated in residencies at Cité international des arts (Paris, marais) and APM (Brittany).
